How to Blog?

February 13, 2014 by Jen Phillips April

Every blogger takes a different approach. Some blog to express their feelings. Others, like most small business folks I know blog to generate income. Their purpose is to create useful content that will help their website rise in the search engines so they’re able to connect with more prospects and create more customers.

Compare these two websites:

Website 1 Website 2
  • Five pages (a “brochure site”)
  • Six paragraphs of copy (across the pages)
  • Two pictures
  • Last updated three years ago

  • Seven pages with 3-4 paragraphs per page
  • Pictures on every page
  • Frequently updated blog
  • Great keyword strategy
  • Last updated yesterday

Which do you think Google will favor?

If you picked Website No. 2, you’re right.

It’s Google’s job to show the best results in search.

“We believed we could build a better search.

We had a simple idea, that not all pages are created equal. Some are more important.”

Sergey Brin, Co-Founder, Google

Write useful and frequent blog posts and your website can be more valuable to your prospects.

How to blog for business:

  • Integrate a blog with your website so you’ll get the most value. WordPress.org is common.
  • Develop blogging topics. What will you blog about?
  • Make it easy for your prospects to read your material. People scan online so use short sentences and white space. Blogging is the home of the one sentence paragraph.
  • Create a template for yourself.
  • Consider possible keywords your prospects will use to find you. Use Google’s Keyword Planner.
  • Build alliances with other business bloggers to share and comment on one another’s blogs. This works best in complementary fields. For example, an acupuncturist and a chiropractor might refer one another.

Your blog can keep your business “top of mind” for your customers and even serve as newsletter fodder.
