Driving more traffic than Linked In, Google + and You Tube COMBINED, the upstart Pinterest is sweeping the social media landscape.
In case you haven’t jumped on board yet, it’s a virtual pinboard. You can plan and pin to as many boards as you want – label them and categorize them to your heart’s content.
Love dogs? Create a pinboard about dogs and post pictures and information. Love to travel? Post pics of places you’ve been or want to go. Create vision boards, plan your dream kitchen, collect recipes…the options are endless.
Then, since it is a social network, you can look at others boards and “repin” images you like from their boards. “Repinning” is like “sharing” on FB. And, of course, you can comment on others. You can also follow people. Then, when you open your page, you see all the boards you follow.
Especially popular with artists, brides-to-be and fashionistas, since December 2011, it’s exploded and is spreading faster than a cold virus. Now, marketers and other business types are trying it out to see the results.
Already, the tech site Mashable reports it drives more traffic than the big dogs—YouTube.
My Pinterest Experiment
As an experiment, I opened an account and posted a few things.
This morning, I created a board called “Doggie Love” because I love dogs and run a website about dogs –www.all-natural-dog-treat.com. I posted a picture called “cute dogs” from a webpage of the same title and within minutes it was “repinned.” Wow!
I’m still not 100% sure how to make sure the images show, for example, I linked to a dog treat recipe from my site and it showed the green banner of my header rather than the picture of the treat. When I closed my page and came back to it there were tons of images from my site. It was as if it’d imported dozens of images from my site. Interesting. Have to spend more time here and work with it a bit more.
Pinterest is turning the social landscape on it’s head. What do you think? Have you used it yet? What do you like about it? Love to hear your comments below.
